Neighborhood Preservation:  Keep your house cool without overworking your AC.

  • Make sure ceiling fans are running counter-clockwise

  • Keep drapes closed during the day, especially on the south and west side of your house

  • Avoid using your oven: grill outside or plan cold meals

  • Change your AC filter

  • Plant shade trees on the south and west side of your house

Neighborhood Safety: A credit freeze (or security freeze) restricts access to your credit report, preventing new accounts from being opened in your name, making it a key tool against identity theft. It is free, does not impact credit scores, and lasts until you remove it. You must contact all three major bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—individually to freeze your credit. You can place a freeze online, by phone, or by mail with each bureau. Online is fastest.

Neighborhood Preservation: Examine the address numbers on your home. Are they clearly visible both during the day and at night? Over time, house numbers can fade or get obscured by landscaping. Take a moment to evaluate your house numbers and ensure they are easily seen from the street.

  • Emergency Safety: In emergencies, rescuers may lose valuable time trying to locate a home. Clearly visible, illuminated, or reflective numbers help responders find you in the dark or under stressful conditions.

  • Navigation & Services: They allow delivery services (UPS, Amazon) and guests to find your home accurately, reducing incorrect deliveries.

  • Visibility Standards: The Bel-Nor ordinance require numbers to be visible from the street. They should be at least 3 inches tall.

  • Curb Appeal & Property Value: Well-maintained and styled house numbers add to the exterior aesthetic and signal pride in ownership.

Neighborhood Safety: Please be alert of phone scammers. They can be tricky and convincing.

Key Strategies to Avoid Scams:

  • Slow Down: Scammers create a false sense of urgency to prevent you from thinking clearly.

  • Verify the Source: If a "bank" or "agency" contacts you, hang up and call them back using a trusted number from their official website or your statement. Do not take a phone number to call back from the person on the call.

  • Never Pay Upfront: Legitimate organizations will not demand immediate payment via unusual methods like gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

If You Are Targeted: Report scams to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

Operating on the honor system, anyone can take a book or donate one, fostering community and increasing book access 24/7. Bel-Nor has THREE little libraries:

  • Unity Lutheran Church: 8454 Glen Echo Dr. This little library has a rotating collection of children's books and books for older readers.

Neighborhood Safety: The spring is known to bring severe storms. Here are some helpful reminders:

  • Tornado sirens in STL county are now zoned. Sirens will sound for the immediate area of potential danger. Sirens will not sound throughout the county.

  • In a tornado, seek shelter in the basement or an interior room. Seek safety under a table or stairs for added protection.

  • Local news channel live stream on their website to follow the storm.

  • The National Weather Service recommends not to open windows during a tornado warning to minimize pressure. They recommend that a solid structure (no windows or doors open) has a better chance of escaping major damage.

  • Know how to turn off the water, gas, and electric in your home.

  • Make sure you have working fire extinguishers in your home.

  • Have back-up batteries charged and ready for phones.
