Mosquito Control: It’s that time of year, time to enjoy your yard and neighbors, but those pesky mosquitos come out to prey. Here are some helpful tips to help eliminate mosquitos:
Remove all standing water: The smallest amount of water can still breed mosquitos, think about gutters, pot saucers, puddles in containers
Choose the right plants: Plant basil, lavender, lemongrass, citronella grass, and rosemary. These have been proven to deter mosquitos when planted near patios and porches.
Ponds, Pools, etc: If you have a pond, pool, bird bath, or rain barrels, keep the water moving to prevent mosquitos from laying eggs or add mosquito dunks to the water.
Mosquito Traps: There are a lot of DIY options to attract and trap mosquitos. I invite everyone to research, test, and report back on the most effective options this summer.
Keep sewers clean: As you continue to do yard clean-up, please make sure to pick up your leaves and grass clippings. Leaves and clippings in storm drains can block water from flowing, which can lead to flooding in streets and nearby areas. Leaves and clippings that end up in waterways can cause water pollution. When leaves decay, they release nutrients that can lead to algae blooms and other issues.
Neighborhood Preservation: Do you know someone in the city that deserves some recognition for their beautiful home? The Pride of the City Award recognizes residents who faithfully keep their property in great condition and those who have upgraded their property. If you know someone that you feel deserves this award, you can fill out a form on the BN website or at City Hall.
Neighborhood Safety: “In communities that have a high level of social organization, you have low levels of crime,” says a police officer. This social cohesion includes activities like litter pick-up, neighbors socializing on porches, and maintaining their lawns, as well as ensuring vacant properties appear cared for. A predatory criminal is aware when they are under observation; they typically seek out the easiest targets to avoid capture.
